It's my Soapbox
By Dorothy Wilson

Hi Fellow Seniors:

I am back from holidays in Calgary, Alberta, where I visited with my two sons and their families. I had hoped I might escape from the terrible heat wave in Ontario but it was very hot there as well. I had a great time in spite of the weather and had the opportunity to visit Banff Springs Hotel for lunch one day with my family and it was simply marvelous. Each lady received a rose before she was seated and the choice of food ranged from pancakes to pizza to shrimp and my favourite part, the dessert table.

Of course being situated in the Rocky Mountains, the view from the hotel was staggering for one not used to anything but small hills to look at. Then endless line of these majestic towers made out of solid rock brought home to me how small my place in the universe really is. I took the cable car to the top of Sulphur Mountain the same day and just can't find the words to describe the magnificent sight as you look down into the depths of the mountain range. It can get a little scary if you don't like heights but it didn't bother me thank goodness. I wouldn't have liked to miss the adventure.

While in Calgary, I took the opportunity to visit the Kerby Centre and Patricia Allen who is the Chief Executive Officer for the Centre, gave me a great deal of information and also introduced me to members of her staff who were very helpful. I felt very welcome and was invited to lunch one day but unfortunately could not attend. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Pat and her staff for a very friendly and informative visit.

Every time I begin to think that no one is interested in my column, I receive a letter like the one below:

"I like your writings and agree with your comments on shopping carts where you have to put a quarter in the slot on a freezing cold afternoon. Keep up the good work" Signed: The President, Abbeyfield Society, extending care and compansionship to single, lonely seniors.

Thank you for those kind words, and I must confess my ignorance as to the location of Abbeyfield. Perhaps you could send me another e-mail and let me know the province where you live.

I want to also encourage all the seniors out there to write to me. I will try to answer all your letters either in my column or personally.

Now that I am starting my column again, I have numerous subjects that I want to deal with but I also want to know what you would like to hear about. Coming up will be a column on "Adopt a Pet" and also some neat Christmas ideas and maybe a receipe or two.
