It's my Soapbox

By Dorothy Wilson

Hi Fellow Seniors:

Happy New Year to all my readers and to all the new adventures just waiting for us out there. The start of a New Year is a unique opportunity for all of us to focus on getting out of our rut and trying new ideas, new challenges and new ways of living.

It’s like a blank slate waiting to be written on with new places to visit, new foods to try and new people to meet. Its an exciting to see what you can find to fill up your year and I don’t want to hear “I’m too old to change”. That is absolute nonsense. You can do whatever you are physically and financially able to do.

My year has already started to fill up with a trip to a NEW place – Eastern Canada as well as my yearly trek to Calgary. I have already tried a NEW food which is an Italian fruit bread called “Panatone” and is just wonderful. However, I am told this bread is only made at Christmas so I have bought a few for my freezer.

I am already meeting NEW people and I also want to feature a NEW addition to my column which is “Cooking for One or Two” and would welcome any chefs in the City who would like to participate as long as the recipes are simple, economical and delicious.

I hope to feature this addition once a month.

I have lots of spaces left on my slate to mark in other NEW projects. I may take up acting, skydiving, or dancing but my dream of being a ballet dancer or opera singer have long since been put away and hopefully someone else will fill that dream.

The idea of trying something NEW does not have to be intimidating. You can change the way you do your hair or take a course in the proper make-up to wear. You guys out there can change your cologne or even start walking around the block. Don’t be afraid to take on challenges that you haven’t tried before. Change is stimulating and anything that makes you use your brain is good for you.

Bye for now and let me know your ideas on new and challenging paths to trod.
