By Jeff and Judy

Between Seasons Greetings

After weeks and weeks of endlessly-glorious sunny days and dry, crystal clear nights – ideal incidentally for sleeping in the open under the stars in tandem on the sun (or moon) deck – our tropical island paradise is suddenly again blessed with that time of year Jeff and I like best.

The fleeting period when nature hasn’t quite made up its mind whether to plunge head first into the rainy season or continue twiddling its toes in the non-rainy-season for a while longer.

Which means in meteorological terms we’ve had more drenchings in the past three days than in the past three months and fields and lawns that were brown and dusty are now sprouting green, trees without leaves are getting them again and mangoes are filling and the breadfruit swelling. But between these short sporadic torrents the sun comes out again in all its glory and minutes later the whole island positively glistens.

In fact I could say – and will – it’s when everything springs back to life. And I’ve never given it any thought before but isn’t that why we call it ‘Spring?’

Not that Jeff and I need extraneous impulses to kick-start us – we consciously try living in full active mode for 365 days a year – but few sights compare to the wet leaves waving on the palm trees at the bottom of our garden reflecting the sun’s rays like a thousand tiny mirrors.

It’s what I could call – and will – positively invigorating.

So who cares if we’re sea bathing when a sudden shower hits? I’ve written about this before but to luxuriate in warm Caribbean Sea saltwater with fresh cool rainwater running down your face is like starting your Ferrari after a complete tune-up. (No, we do not have, nor have we ever wanted, a Ferrari – it’s used here merely to illustrate the point. This analogy works just as well with a Toyota or Skoda.)

Swimming in the rain isn’t the only thing we enjoy. They even made a hit movie about “singing in the rain,” so we do that too.

Another rainy day (or night) Sellers family custom practiced during the West Indian springtime is after moving the outdoor lounge bed six feet under the terrace roof we can – still technically outdoors and clinging together – also justifiably claim to be “sleeping in the rain.”

And if you haven’t tried it, trust me, you really should.

Just who are Jeff and Judy? Judy and Jeff Sellers are a US couple who love sunsets, world travel, fine wines, good food and each other. As often as possible and not necessarily in that order. They currently seek a congenial publisher for their "Frisky after Sixty" book ('A Good in Bed Read') and after many requests from friends all over the world waiting impatiently for their local newspapers to carry this column. To find out more go to Frisky After Sixty.
