A Mere Mortal's Eyes
by: Sharon A. Bryington
2/4/2002

When I was a girl, I wrote of blindness
And what I would do.
But you really don't know
Until it happens to you.
You think of the things
You wanted to see,
And a thought comes to mind
Why me, why me, why me?

But then I thought of things
God has shown to me,
like a humming bird
Tiny as a bumble bee.
And the birth of a grandchild
I witnessed this too,
With a wonder so great
I cannot begin
To express it to you!

The smile from my child
When he first gazed upon
His first child born,
And witnessed their bond.
The light of love that shines
From my own love's eyes.
With rapture and wonder,
this is a gift, I realize.

And then I understand
And somehow know
I'll still be allowed to see,
Though my sight will go.
I have seen and will see
Riches untold,
Wondrous sights
Worth more than gold.

For God gives me sights,
That encompass the earth and the skies.
Sights I cannot see
With my mere mortal's eyes.

A little information on how Sharon came to write this poem ..... she recently found out that she is going blind. When people asked how she could be taking it so well she came up with this poem.
